On Monday, fleeing gunmen ambushed the convoy of Ikedi Ohakim, a former governor of Imo State, and killed four of his police personnel.
On Monday night, a convoy of Ohakim was attacked in Oriagu in the state's Ehime Mbano Local Government Area.
Ohakim, who almost escaped, had his backup car bombed, killing the four police officers in his convoy.
Ohakim was reportedly returning from a visit with two of his children when the shooters opened fire.
According to a source close to the former governor, the driver's quickness enabled the ex-governor to escape.
“his excellency was the main target but his driver was smart enough to beat them because they were driving to block him.
“Disappointed that their main target had escaped, they blocked his backup vehicle and burnt it. The four policemen with him burnt.”
Punch reports that a reinforcement escorted him to his home from Owerri, the state capital.
Ohakim was sober when he spoke to the publication.
